Mission 118 Mission 117 | View All Mission Reports | Mission 119 Departure: Arrival: Date: Mission Report Heidi G, a 37 year old mother of 4 suffered a severe brain stem level stroke while at home in the company of her husband and kids. She was rushed to the local hospital the day it began, but even though she had significant symptoms, her CT scan was read as “normal.” This is the case many times in a newly developing stroke as the clot is not visualized. Many large health care centers now have different ways for testing to diagnose and possibly provide early intervention for such clots. Unfortunately this level of care is not always available in rural communities. Heidi finally opened her eyes after days in the ICU, but it was found that due to the severe injury, she was “locked in.” She was aware of her surroundings but unable to communicate with the outside world. She was flown out to world renowned Rehab Institute of Chicago, but sadly did not regain any use of her body except to move her eyes up for “yes” and down for “no”. We were blessed to be able to go and get her home from rehab, back to her town in Bismark ND. Her husband seemed exhausted as he had been assisting with her care and sleeping in the rehab center for weeks. They were fortunate to have the “grandparents” back home to help with caring for their children but he longed to be back with them. Amazingly his fellow workers and friends at his power plant where he worked donated their paid time off to him so he could be beside his wife during the rehab. The rehab center was able to teach her to use a computer program that scanned her Right eye movements to tell it commands-but that technology is not readily available in other centers. We pray she will have the miracle in her life to allow her to more easily communicate with her family and pray she knows she will get a “new body” with Christ someday. We also pray that her children and husband will be able to cope and rely on God’s plan. We dropped her off and tucked her in at a beautiful nursing facility and flew back with an unusually shaped orange rising moon of God’s creation and clear skies with big awesome bright stars. Thanks to great flying by Hal and Mike, and to great care by RT Mike and to Superior Ambulance Service for donated ground transport for Heidi. Tam
